Chilly Czech Capital

1/24/2010

Prague Old Town Square
In the heart of January we headed to the frigid Czech capital for an extended weekend. What kept us warm in those freezing temperatures though was a fair share of hefty, steamy soups, mulled wine (they sold in every corner) and of course the warm beanies. It's actually pretty nice time of the year to visit Prague, considering it's not filled with tourists and it's pretty cool to see the city's rooftops covered with snow! Also, the cold offered a good excuse to lounge over at cosy coffee shops and restaurants and eat more than we'd usually would ;). Isn't that a crucial aspect of travel anyways?

Other "benefits" of traveling during the freezing winter months is that no matter how you climb up the hill to the castle district or no matter how fast you stroll through the tiny streets of old town...you will not get all sweaty. The power of positive thinking - If only it would make us warm, too, when needed! ;) Seriously though, it wasn't too cold. And we throughly enjoyed seeing the wintry Prague with barely a tourist around us. I would totally go again! But then again, I'm sure it's pretty different in the summer...green, vibrant and full of sunny terraces. So, perhaps we'll go in June next time!

Here are the highlights of things & places we loved!

Cobblestone streets
Architectural details
Wintry cityscape
Steamy soups & Hot buns from street stalls
Even statues looked cold...
Little boutiques
Hot wine for 1€ in every corner
Beautiful buildings
Market stands
Misty views
The Charles Bridge
Panoramic views from the Cathedral tower
Crispy temperatures
Red rooftops with snow

The Old Square
Walk in the Castle district
Snowy slopes (and cold feet!)
Views down from the Castle area

Prague is really beautiful by night, especially the Charles Bridge, but unfortunately our camera at the time wasn't really good in night shots. I guess we really need to go again...
