Beaune - The capital of Burgundy wine region |
For wine- and food lovers, this little town of Beaune is a gem. It's the capital of the prestigious wine region Burgundy and definitely lives up to its reputation; countless wine cellars, caves, boutiques, tasting tours - it's all there just waiting for you to start exploring. Not to mention the endless stretches of vineyards just outside the town! You can either visit the wineries (and make some great purchases on spot!) or just enjoy the countryside ride through the many surrounding villages and vineyards. Some of the most celebrated wine areas (e.g. Côte de Nuits) are located within a driving distance!
Beaune itself isn't your usual tourist trap but rather this small, pretty town that has enough things to keep you entertained for a day or two. Few times a week it has a market where you can find fresh regional products but other than that you can observe pretty normal French joie de vivre on its tiny town square.
That said, Burgundy makes a great weekend destination for anyone who's into discovering the world of wines and other French delicacies. And considering that some of the world's most expensive wines are produced here, you may get a once in a lifetime chance to taste some of those Grand Crus...
