Tokyo: Shibuya 渋谷区

11/04/2014

Shibuya scramble crossing
There are a lot of words that could be used to describe this particular ward in Tokyo, but the ones that come in mind the quickest are busy, busier, the busiest. In fact, it's probably the only thing you are thinking about once you're coming out from the Shibuya station (which is one of the busiest in Tokyo) and move over to the world-renowned intersection that's equally hectic. Although Shibuya is more than just this pedestrian crossing, this is often the part that sticks with you- the immense crowd crossing from every direction, all at the same time, in perfect harmony...if not synchronised. It's pretty impressive. And once the light turns red, the intersection is cleared almost instantly.

Other than that the district around the station is known for its flashing neon lights, huge video screens, endless shopping opportunities, restaurants and nightlife. During the weekend (and also weeknights) it's a popular spot for people looking for almost any kind of entertainment. But just a short walk away we found already a way calmer side to Shibuya as we made our way to Harajuku and Yoyogi park. Personally, I found this to be the very charm of Tokyo- all these different worlds coming together and co-existing literally next to each other.

In the end of it, one thing's for sure; we'll always remember Shibuya from its undeniable energy that totally set us in that Tokyo state of mind. And I would surely claim it as one of those must-see and do's while in town...

SHIBUYA CROSSING

Streets are filled with shops and restaurants.

HACHIKŌ ハチ公

Just between the station and the crossing there is this dog statue that bears an endearing story: This dog used to come outside the station to wait for his master every day like clockwork. One day, the owner died on his way home and never made it to their meeting spot. But that didn't stop this loyal friend to come and wait there every single day for years and years after his passing. Finally, when the dog was found dead near the Station, they put up a statue to honour its incredible love and loyalty for his master.

Today, it's a popular meeting point for people...not sure if it's because of its location just outside the station (which is probably the main reason) or if it has a special meaning for the locals. Anyways, such a sad, yet beautiful story!

TIPS & LINKS

Shibuya Crossing
- One of the best (and most famous) places to really see the intersection from above is the Starbucks just across from the station. You're not even required to purchase anything to go and check out the view!
- We passed the crossing on two different occasions, and I must say it was even more crowded in the evening! So, if you want to see it at its busiest, go after 6pm!
- Did you know that many Hollywood movies were filmed in this location...? Like Lost in Translation, The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift etc.

Shopping & Dining
- Just around the station (and the crossing) you can find countless stores and restaurants, pretty much on any street from there. Also, the area is famous for its nightlife
